Marketing Statement:
BLM is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to join the team to serve as an Education Technician with the Butte Falls Field Office of the Medford District. 

The BLM manages more land - 245 million surface acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The BLM, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

Physical Demands:  Must be able to work effectively in isolated siutations.  Indoor classroom and administrative work involves sitting, standing, walking and lifting and storage of equipment and supplies.  Outdoor duties require moderate to heavy exertion, such as hiking over wet, muddy, or uneven terrain. Must be able to walk on uneven rocks, loose cobble, and slippery surfaces.  Work frequently includes lifting and carrying of equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

Work environment: Some locations are isolated from the urban environment. Work performed outdoors may occur under a variety of climatic conditions. May encounter insects, poison oak, and snakes while performing duties.

This position is located at the Medford District, Butte Falls Resource Area in Medford, Oregon. The incumbent of this position develops and implements environmental education programs associated with the Butte Falls Resource Area recreation program, specifically the Table Rocks and McGregor Park. The McGregor Park facilities are managed in a cooperative venture between the Army Corps of Engineers and BLM. The Table Rocks area is managed cooperatively between the BLM and The Nature Conservancy. Duties include: conducts state-standard bases environmental education programs for a wide variety of audiences including civic organizations, public schools, universities and other interested organizations. Researches and develops new programs and materials.; provides information about environmental education through signs, displays, brochures, newsletters, news articles, correspondence, telephone calls, and personal contacts with the general public and news media, staffs the Nature Center at McGregor Park, interacts with the general public, answers questions about area resources, provides support at special events.  Some evening and weekend work required. Spanish speaking skills are highly desirable.

  • Education Requirements:
    Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements. Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. If you meet the qualification requirements, you application will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans.   In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position. The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored. The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position.

    1.  Knowledge of standardized interpretive principles, concepts and methodologies and ability to apply this knowledge in the development and presentation of interpretive programs that meet National Association of Interpretive (NAI) standards, National Park Service and/or NAI interpretive competency benchmarks, BLM resource stewardship goals and established Butte Falls Field Office interpretive themes, goals and objectives.

    2.  Knowledge of natural and cultural resources of the Pacific Northwest.

    3.  Interpersonal skills required to communicate effectively with staff, the general public, teachers, community groups, and education and scientific professionals of partner agencies concerning natural and historical resources, and education/interpretive services.

    4.  Effective public speaking and writing skills.

    5.  Knowledge of electronic media use and the skill to operate audio/visual equipment and personal computers for preparing presentations, reports, brochures and newsletters. 
    Specialized Experience Requirements:

    In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume.  To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (one year at the GS-4) of the position to be filled.   Examples: Experience working in a park or historical setting, meeting with the public or school groups to provide information, and conducting tours to explain the importance of the site’s historical and/or natural heritage. Work in a gift shop, interpretive center, or other facility collecting fees.  Taking part in living history performances, or providing training to other staff and/or volunteers.  Assisting with the development of and presenting interpretive and educational programs to school groups, the general public, or other organizations.

    OR  Substitution of Education:  Successful completion of 4 years of education in any field above the high school level may be substituted for specialized experience  OR Equivalent combinations of education and experience.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Regularly scheduled tour of duty includes working varying shifts which include weekend and evening shifts.
