Summary:

This position is located the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoological Park’s Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institution in Front Royal Virginia. The incumbent will be responsible for providing purchasing, property management, the processing of travel orders, and other operational needs associated for with center and/or program activities. Incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining a cuff record system by updating information and documentation systems, as well as other similar functions of administration for NZP/SCBI. NZP has major facilities located at Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC and Front Royal, VA with a number of staff members located permanently in different areas of the country or overseas.

Duties

  • Helps Administrative staff monitor budget execution for a center/program to insure that center/program objectives are met and funds are spent in accordance to their guidelines.
  • Procures goods and services by preparing contracts, using a purchase card, and/or creating a purchase order then verifying product or services are accounted for, received, and vendor is paid.
  • Incumbent processes domestic and foreign travel for center/program staff its visitors, and SI Interns and Fellows.
  • Performs programmatic functions relating to the Departments mission and functions.

    1. Knowledge and ability of automated office applications, e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access (or other databases) and SharePoint.
    2. Knowledge of government policies and procedures related to procurement and travel functions.
    3. Ability to provide administrative support to a unit, department, or center while maintaining a high level of customer service.

    Qualifications:
    Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 (Federal or other) at the GS-5 level that is close or similar to the work of this job.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as procuring supplies and services; providing budget, financial, travel, and personnel management support and performing other administrative functions.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

    Or Education: One full year of academic graduate level education or superior academic achievement may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirements.

    Superior Academic Achievement Provisions:

    1. A grade-point average (GPA) of B (3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for all completed undergraduate courses, or courses completed in the last two years of undergraduate curriculum; or

    2. A grade-point average (GPA) of B+ (3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale) for the required courses in your major field of study, or required courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; or

    3. Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study; or

    4. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society, other than freshman honor societies.


    Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.
